COVID-19: Global Smartphone sales dip by 56m in Q1 2020

Owing to measures put in place by governments across the world to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, global Smartphone shipping has seen a drop of 16.8 per cent to 55.5 million, says analyst firm Omdia.

The firm in the new report stated that 274.4 smartphone units were shipped to customers in the first three months of 2020, a figure which represents a 55.5 million drop from the 329.9 million units recorded for the first quarter of 2019.
Omdia, however, predicted that the global Smartphone market will dip by 13.1 per cent 2020, with about 1.2 billion units sold in 2020 when juxtaposed with 1.39 billion units in 2019.

According to Director of Smartphone Research and Analysis at Omdia, Jusy Hong, the Smartphone market was in turmoil because production ceased in factories in China, halting production of phones and their key components early in the first quarter.
“While concerns about this situation have been resolved, the Smartphone brands also faced new challenges, including disrupted launch schedules for new phones. Even more troubling for Smartphone maker is a major drop in global demand due to mandates for government closings,” Hong added
Of all the three top sellers in the first quarter of 2020, Huawei recorded the highest percentage in reduced shipments with 17.1 per cent when compared with the first quarter of 2019, and was followed closely by Samsung and Apple with 17 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.
