Covid-19: Delta, Anambra police collaborate to enforce boundary closure

The Anambra state Commissioner of Police, John Abang and his Delta state counterpart, Hafiz Inuwah, have agreed to strengthen the enforcement of the lockdown order and ban on inter-state movements.

The two police coommissioners visited the Bridge Head, Onitsha, on Friday, to decongest the bridge and ensure the free flow of essential goods and essential services providers.

Speaking to journalists at the Bridge Head in Asaba, the Anambra state Police Commissioner, Mr. John Abang, said that the step was taken in the overall interest of the public and urged people to endure the attendant inconvenience pending a review of the directives.

Abang said that the measures were being put in place to ensure that security men manning the boundaries between the two states do not compromise.

His Delta state counterpart, Hafiz Inuwah said that the police in Delta state will collaborate with those in Anambra state to ensure that people do not lack essential goods and services, even as movement across states’ boundaries were restricted.

Special Adviser to the governor of Anambra state, Mr. Sam Onwuteaka, who was at the bridge with his men enforcing the ban on inter-state movement, also said that their efforts have been yielding positive results, especially with the interception of trucks loaded with passengers.

An Asaba resident, Ifeanyi Asogwa, who spoke to journalists said that the preventive measures outlined by the two state governments were in the interest of the masses, but complained that the ban on movement of people across state boundaries was negatively affecting the businesses and daily livelihood of the people as most Onitsha traders live in Delta state.

He called for better measures in curtailing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic instead of the lockddown and restriction of movements.
