Court reinstate AFAN Chairman, Jiller

A High Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau State Capital has reinstated one Mr. Goting Jiler, as the authentic Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN).

Daily Times had earlier reported that the former Chairman Mrs. Sarah Chuwang, having exhausted her constitutional enshrined maximum tenure of six years, refused to hand over to a newly elected Chairman, Mr. John Goting Jiller, as the valid chairman of the association.

Failure to vacate office, Mr. John Goting Jiller, dragged Mrs. Chuwang to court, seeking a proper interpretation of the AFAN Constitution which stipulates a six years tenure in office for the chairman of the association.

The case registered under suit No. PLD/J256M/2016, accused Mrs. Sarah Chuwang for overstaying in office and failing to conduct election after exhausting their constitutionally enshrined maximum tenure of six years which expired in 2007.

The judge presiding over the matter, Justice P.D Damuluk, declared that the defendant (Mrs. Sarah Chuwang), ceased to be the Plateau State executive of AFAN since 2007 and their dealings since that period were ultra vires, null and void.

Damuluk in favour of the Mr. Jiller, directed Mrs. Sarah Chuwang to hand over to the new EXCO headed by John G. Jiller, with immediate effect and slammed N50,000 cost against the defendant (Chuwang), in favour of the plaintiff.

Consequently, in a statement singed by the AFAN State Legal Adviser, Barr. Micah Adaji Esq and made available to newsmen, it laud the decision of the court, while calling on members of the association to join hands with the newly reinstated EXCO to further take AFAN to the next level.

His words, “there is no better way to advance the cause of Agriculture and farmers on the Plateau other than through the unity of purpose and Cohesiveness of the over 80 percent of farmers in the state; Agriculture is the single largest employer of labour not only in Plateau State but in Nigeria as a whole therefore the present leadership of AFAN is ready to shoulder this cause and together we shall succeed”, he said.
