Conduct LG poll now, group urges Lalong

Worried by the absence of democracy at the grassroots in Plateau state, a Plateau-based group,  the Coalition for the Defence of Democracy (CDD) has called on Governor Simon Lalong to  set a machinery in motion for the immediate conduct of local government elections in the state.

The 17 Local Government Areas of the state have been under management of caretaker committee members who were appointed by the Governor since July last year

The group who addressed a press conference in Jos yesterday decried the absence of democratically elected local government chairmen and called for the sack of management committee chairmen of the 17 council areas of the state.

The secretary of CDD Prince Miaphen  regretted  that the current crop of management committee chairmen who have spend close to one year in office have no respect for the will of the people in grass root.

According to them, “If elected chairmen and councillors were put in place there will be  development and the dividends of democracy will trickle down to the grass roots as the people are seriously yearning for change and inclusive economic growth”.

He further stressed, “Democracy must  begin at the grass roots or else the yearning and aspiration of the people will be roundly subvert ed.”

The Coalition for Defence of Democracy also called for the sack of non performing commissioners in governor Lalong’s cabinet who he said” are a burden and cog in the wheel of development and economic growth stressing that at a time of economic recession, ineptitude and poor performance should not be tolerated in any measure. CDD said.
