Cleric calls for intensified political education, awareness among electorate ahead of elections

A cleric, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Okechukwu-Okorie, has called for intensified political education and awareness for Nigerians ahead of the forthcoming general elections. He said that many Nigerians were still ignorant of the roles expected of them in the forthcoming general elections. Okechukwu-Okorie made the call during his sermon at Saints Timothy and Titus Catholic Church, Isheri-Osun, Lagos State. He said that politics should be a big deal for the citizenry as it was going to be an opportunity for them to elect leaders who would make ‘project Nigeria’ work. He advised that as citizens of the country, they must be aware of the political developments in the country and that every citizen has a role to play. “Politics should be a big deal to us all because we have the opportunity to elect someone we feel is good and fit for the future of our country at election period. “The concept that some people just do not care about politics, elections or do not want to educate themselves about politics does not make sense. “Many Nigerians are ignorant of their roles in politics. Many are blinded by religion; religion does not stop anyone from participating in partisan politics. “Many people tag politics as a ‘dirty game’ and refuse to get involved or shy away from playing their roles. “Whether we like it or not, politics affects each and every Nigerian. “It is a vital tool to transform Nigeria for good, it is a tool to decide the fate and future of Nigerians. “So, ensure you go and get your PVCs, ensure you go out to vote and vote wisely. That is the only way out of the country’s present challenges,” he said. Okechukwu-Okorie urged the INEC , political parties, political scholars and other informed individuals to educate Nigerians on the need to be involved in politics and electoral processes. He also urged Nigerians to watch the ongoing debates among party candidates on television stations to make informed and better choices at the polls. “Understanding the policies each candidate has and finding a candidate that best suits your opinions and beliefs is so important. “It will help you vote for good leaders that will bring positive transformation for the benefits of all,” he said. Okechukwu-Okorie also advised Nigerian’s to shun vote-buying and selling. “If you sell your vote, you do not have any right to complain tomorrow if things do not work out because you had already sold out your right to enjoy basic amenities and better infrastructure,” he said.
