CJN swears in Justice Umar Mainasara as Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal

The Supreme Court was on Tuesday, October 7, the venue of the swearing-in of Justice Mainasara Umar as the new Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
Administering the oath, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, charged him to uphold the law “without fear or favour, ill will or affection,” and to ensure his conduct inspires confidence while promoting transparency and administrative excellence.
She reminded Justice Mainasara that his loyalty must remain with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Constitution, and the cause of justice, rather than to “any individual, group or authority.”
The CJN stressed that the role would expose him to “high personalities and sensitive issues resting on the spirit of public trust,” urging him to justify the confidence reposed in him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through principled and impartial leadership.
“The office of the Chairman demands of its occupant a person with sound judgment, unshakable independence, and the moral courage to do what is right, regardless of whose ox is gored,” she warned.
In his response, Justice Mainasara expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to administer justice with “courage, fairness, and unbridled humanity.” He vowed to strengthen institutional integrity within the tribunal, adding that “justice will not only be done but seen to be done properly in every case.”
With his swearing-in, the tribunal now has its full complement of three members, enabling it to resume adjudicating pending cases stalled by the absence of a substantive chairman. The other members are Justice William A. Atedze and Justice Julie Anabor.
