CBN Tennis: Marylove, Mcleod create upsets!

Upcoming junior player Marylove Edwards has created major upset at the ongoing 39th Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Tennis Championship when she defeated tournament’s 7th seed, Ronke Akingbade 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the Round of 16 matches of the ladies singles category.

As if that was not enough petit Marylove Edwards who entered the tournament through a wild card, still went ahead to beat Deborah Gbadamosi 6-1, 6-0, in one of the quarter final games Thursday to reach the semi-finals where she has come face-to-face with tournament 2nd seed, Blessing Samuel.

Another junior player Angel Mcleod dealt a serious blow to the face of tournament 6th seed, Chidinma Abaa whom she defeated 6-3, 5-0 retired to pick her quarter final ticket before bowing to the superior fireworks of Blessing Samuel who stopped her 6-2, 6-4.

Women’s top seed, Christy Agugbom is still in the game following her 6-1, 6-2, victory over Omolayo Bamidele in Thursday’s quarter finals to move into today’s semi- finals where she will engage 5th seed, Sarah Adegoke.

In the Men’s category, tournament’s 2nd seed, Sylvester Emmanuel, beat 14th seed, Henry Atseye 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in an epoch encounter that was carried over still the following day to cruise into the semi-finals, while 7th seed, Sunday Emmanuel dismissed former champion and tournament 3rd seed, Thomas Otu by 4-6, 5-7, 7-6.

Otu in his usual characteristics started abusing the Chief Umpire, Saidu Musa and even extended the insult to journalists for no concrete reasons.

Based on this fact, Thomas Otu has been banned from further participation in the championship, meaning that he can no longer play his doubles event which he has already gotten to the quarter final.,

Meanwhile, giant killer, Sunday Emmanuel will today battle Joseph Imeh in the first semi-finals of the Men’s Singles event while last year’s runners-up and tournament’s 2nd seed, Sylvester Emmanuel will be up against 4th seed, Abdulmumuni Babalola. The Championship ends on Saturday June 3, 2017.
