Canal+ takes over MultiChoice in $3bn deal, gains full control of DStv, GOtv

French media conglomerate Canal+ has finalised a $3 billion acquisition of South Africa-based MultiChoice Group, securing full control of pay-TV giants DStv and GOtv.

The deal, approved by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal on July 23, gives Canal+ the remaining 55% stake it did not previously own.

However, the transaction is still subject to final approval from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA). Completion is expected by October 8, 2025.

Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+, described the green light as a pivotal moment.

“The approval by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal marks the final stage in the South African competition process and clears the way for us to conclude the transaction in line with our previously communicated timeline,” he said.

“This acquisition represents a significant step in expanding our presence across Africa, particularly in English-speaking markets.”

With this move, Canal+ cements its position in Africa’s booming media landscape, building on MultiChoice’s legacy and a subscriber base of nearly 50 million across the continent.

Founded in 1985, MultiChoice has played a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s pay-TV ecosystem, offering a diverse mix of local and international programming through its flagship services, DStv and GOtv.

Canal+, a subsidiary of France’s Vivendi Group, has been gradually increasing its stake in MultiChoice since 2020, culminating in a full takeover offer launched earlier this year.

The acquisition is seen as a major shake-up in Africa’s media industry, potentially redefining content distribution, production, and pricing models across key markets.
