Buhari’s wife tasks women to aspire for leadership positions

The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has stressed a need for women to step up to higher callings of leadership in the government and the private sector.

She gave the charge at the All Progressives Congress (APC), organised a one-day Summit on Entrepreneurship and Leadership for South-East Women in Enugu.

The summit, which was convened by the South East Zonal Women Leader, Rev. Mrs. Sally William Chinedu and other women leaders of the zone, had the objective of providing certain essential tools that would help women to develop their leadership potentials.

In a goodwill message delivered at the summit, Mrs. Buhari, who was represented by the wife of the Chief of Army staff, Mrs. Umra Buratai, said that she was honoured to be invited to the first summit on Leadership and Entrepreneurship organised by the APC, South-East Zone.

She noted that women entrepreneurship had been recognised as an important source of growth, adding that it could make a particularly strong contribution to the economic well-being of the family and communities.

“As we are aware, women entrepreneurship has been recognised as an important source of economic growth.

“Women entrepreneurs can make a particularly strong contribution to the economic well-being of the family and communities, poverty reduction and women’s empowerment, thus contributing to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

“I believe this summit will not only challenge you, but will provide certain essential tools to help women to develop their leadership potentials”, she stated.

Chinedu stated that the summit was even more indispensable given the present economic situation of the world, Nigeria in particular.

She promised to mobilise women from each local government and provide them with intensive skills acquisition training in diverse trades and profession.

In his remark, Chairman of Enugu State Chapter of APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, gave an assurance that Nigerian women would continue to accord them the recognition they deserved.

He said APC remained a party for progress, adding that it was committed in transforming the nation via its various human- oriented programme and polices, anchored on its change agenda.
