Benin teen traumatised after escaping cult recruitment attempt by peer

Concerns over the growing reach of cult groups among young people in Benin City have intensified following the ordeal of a 13-year-old boy, Samuel Eghosa Odior, who now lives in fear after narrowly escaping an attempted recruitment by a peer in his neighbourhood.

Samuel, a student of a private secondary school in the city, was reportedly unaware that his neighbourhood friend was involved in cult activities.

According to sources close to the family, the peer made repeated efforts to lure him into the group, believing that Samuel had unintentionally become aware of some of their secrets.

Though the recruitment attempt failed, it left the boy visibly shaken and anxious.

Besides, since the failed recruitment exercise, Samuel who usually assists his mother, a foodstuff trader at Ekiosa market no longer does that for fear of his friend and his cult members

In response to the looming threat, Samuel’s father engaged the services of a private security guard to accompany him regularly for his safety.

Despite this measure and the government efforts to curb cult activities in the State, family sources say the psychological toll on Samuel remains severe as he no longer feels safe and now lives in a constant state of fear and uncertainty.
