Abia govt standardizes measurement cup, threatens offenders

In order to standardize measurement, the Abia state government Monday, introduced standard measurement cup in the state with a warning that any trader or group attempting to shortchange members of the public will have him or herself to blame.
Handing down the warning in Umuahia, the state Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Hon. Mrs. Kate Nwosu, while launching a new standard measurement cup, said the state government will set up a task force to implement the policy.
According to the commissioner, the standard cup was to protect consumers from the hands of dubious traders who hide under pretense of buying and selling to cheat the public, noting that the era of non-compliance of such government directives in the stat was over, while disclosing that the violation of the Government directive will attract imprisonment.
According to her, this has caused many troubles at both homes and markets and encourage Consumer Protection Council to be at a look at and urged the public especially households (women) to obtain the cup for themselves to avoid repeat of the past.
She assured Consumer Protection Council, CPC of Government backing and promised to champion their course to enable them succeed in the state.
Earlier, Chairman of Consumer Protection Council Abia state Chapter Comrade Ukadike Anthony Ogbuagu said the new standard measurement cup in the state was introduced to find lasting solution to conflicts between traders and consumers in the state.
According to him, there was over three different sizes of cups used in the state, resulting in constant misunderstanding between traders and members of the public, hence the new standard cup.
Comrade Ogbuagu assured that Governor Ikpeazu’s administration has find lasting solution to the lingering problem with the introduction of the cup in the State and which is available for every household to obtain at the cost N350.
He therefore assured the Government of their resolve to adhere strictly to the standard cup and thanked the Commissioner for Trade and Investment for coming to their rescue.
in their separate speeches, Chairman of the occasion Mr. Godswill Nwanorue and Chairman Ariaria International Market Aba, Elder Emeka Igara expressed their support to enable CPC succeed in that direction.
