Obosi flooding: Sen Ekwunife visits site, promises FG intervention

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, has called for urgent intervention of Federal and state government on the flooding that has ravaged Owelle- Aja community, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
Senator Ekwunife, who visited the flooding area in Obosi, regretted the level of damage and loss of lives recorded in the community.
It was observed that the flooding had on last Wednesday, claimed four lives and destroyed properties worth millions of Naira.
Many residents had been displaced, as a four storey building had last week, sunk in the erosion caused by the flooding.
From the assessment, the flooding could be at the same level with a bungalow as a school- Great Achiever Nursery and primary school children had been displaced.
“It is disheartening considering the level of devastation. The building plan is not coordinated. The state governments should guide their contractor for proper diversion.
“People at the grassroots are suffering. In such situation, children will go to school, no school will strive here. No religous or other activities will succeed here. Properties here have been devalued,” Ekwunife stated.
The Senator promised to call on the attention of the state government and utilise her legislative position to attract Federal Government and NEMA for emergency response.
Sen Ekwunife, who described the situation as national emergency, also called for tripartite intervention among state, federal and local governments.
Some of the residents, Mr. Edwin Mokokwu, who is the chairman of the community, and Mr. Uzoma Obi explained their ugly predicaments.
They observed the cause of the flooding as poor termination of drainage system at Army barracks, Udeme – Obosi and nearby communities.
The duo while calling on government intervention, recalled that the flooding had ravaged their properties since 2015.
It was recorded that the community had a stretch population of over eight million.
