UNILAG, LASU, others embrace Lagos ‘Ready Set Work’ initiative

*Pledge total participation

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo and Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu and three other Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions have pledged their total commitment to the “Ready Set Work” (RSW) initiative.

RSW is an entrepreneurship and employability concept of the Lagos State government designed for final year students in the tertiary schools in the state to sharpen their knowledge, skills and attitudes ahead of graduation.

The representatives of the six schools including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG (Academics), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe and his counterpart from LASU, Prof. Adewole Noah, made the pledge at the official launch of the portal of the programme in Victoria Island.

They said the training programme would greatly enhance what their students were being taught in schools and become agents of social change and globally competitive after graduations.

They emphasised that their students would participate fully in the programme.

Explaining the two-year-old programme, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh named UNILAG, LASU and LASPOTECH as the three dedicated centres for all the participating students and it would run for 13 weeks.

He said the programme was opened and free of charge for any interested final year students in the six schools notwithstanding their courses of study and would extend to Yaba College of Technology and other tertiary schools in future editions.

He said only 2,000 students would be picked this year across the six schools for the programme and about 750 of them who are outstanding would be placed on internship programmes with partnering companies spanning across the sectors of the economy or win funds to start-up businesses.

He added that 10,000 others who would graduate two years time would also be registered for the academy ahead of their final class.
Some of those who participated in the scheme last year including Messrs oluwafemi Sarunmi and Samuel Akaka, who received cash awards shared their experiences and showcased their biogas project which they are aiming to do in market quantity.
