2019: Don advises voters on choice of candidates

A don, Dr Kamaldeen Babatunde-Omopupa, has advised registered voters to get vital information on candidates they would like to vote for in the forthcoming general elections to enthrone an egalitarian society. Babatunde-Omopupa of the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Ilorin, gave the advice in llorin on Thursday in an interview with the Daily Times. The don advised the electorate to assess candidates campaigning for elective posts on the bases of their antecedents, credibility, capacity and competencies before voting for them. He implored Nigerians to probe into the candidates saying that would guide their choices during voting. He attributed the emergence of bad leaders in the country over the years to insufficient public information on contestants for various elective offices. Babatunde-Omopupa also advised prospective voters to resist the temptation of selling their consciences to the highest bidders in the forthcoming general elections. He said that their voting rights, if independently done, would improve their living conditions. The don said that voters could not make sound judgment before casting their ballots in previous elections due to pervasive ignorance. He canvassed the need for continuous voter education which he described as the key to enthroning good governance. He also advised politicians to eschew violence, acrimony and other negative tendencies in their electioneering.
