2 sisters docked for beating 8-month-old pregnant woman

The police in Ughelli, Delta state on Tuesday arrested two sisters for allegedly beating an 8- month-old pregnant woman and on Thursday arraigned the duo in court.

It was gathered that the defendants, apart from allegedly beating the pregnant woman, bit off her finger in a fight that ensued between them and the woman over a minor disagreement.

The suspects, Victory Ogboru and Mercy Ogboru were both arriagned before Chief Magistrate, Edward Odujo on charges of assult and grievous harm respectively and we’re remanded at the Okere Correctional Centre, Warri.

The suspects in their statements had confessed to assaulting the pregnant woman identified as Ejiro Evelyn (36), who is their neighbour and pleaded for forgiveness.

However, Chief Magistrate Odujo rejected their plea and consequently, remanded them till the next adjournment of May 19, for hearing.

But, a source at the court who does not want his name in print, said that “due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the suspects were rejected as soon as they were taken to Okere Correctional Centre, hence they were returned to the Ughelli Police Station pending the next date of adjournment.”
