11 die in Lagos ghastly bus accident

No fewer than 11 people were confirmed dead in ghastly motor accident which occurred around 6.10pm at Toll Gate, Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

It was gathered that the 14-passenger bus with Lagos colour suddenly summersaulted and busted into flames, killing 11 of the 14 passengers on board.

It was said the bus was moving towards Barger via Otedola Bridge when the accident  occurred.

The remaining three persons who were rescued have been moved to Accident and Trauma Centre, also around Toll Gate.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos State, Dolapo Badmus said the victims include three females and eight male were burnt to death.

According to her; “A total number of 11 people comprising three women and eight men were burnt to death instantly, while four others have been rushed to the hospital. The vehicle which was on speed, the police learnt, suddenly lost control when the tyre busted and subsequently tumbled three times before it went up in flame.

“Investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle escaped the inferno and later fled the scene immediately the accident occurred. Policemen and fire fighters were on ground to put off the fire and clear the obstruction the accident might have caused.”

General Manager of LASEMA, Michael Akindele, who also confirmed the accident said it occurred around 6:10pm.

He said the 14 passenger Volkswagen commercial bus with Lagos colour lost its brake, somersaulted and busted into fire.

“Eleven persons, which include three female and eight male were burnt dead. Three persons were rescued alive and were taken to the accident and emergency unit at toll gate,” he confirmed.

LASEMA’s response team, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State  Fire Service and the Nigerian Police were involved in the rescue.
