UNHCR trains 35 persons on IDPs protection skills

No fewer than 35 persons are currently undergoing advanced training on practical protection skills and legal framework governing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The Director (Protection) United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Nigeria (UNHCR) Mr. Herve Kuate, stated this while delivering his opening speech at a three-day training workshop organised by the agency, and held in Bauchi.

According to him, the participants are also being trained on UNHCR mandate and its role in IDPs protection in North East Nigeria.

“The training targets staff from the National Emergency Management Agency in Gombe and its state affiliate, the State Emergency Agencies areas hosting IDPs. Other participants will also be drawn from among local government areas staff concerned with protection related issues such as health, social affairs, education, women affairs, as well as community leaders and traditional rulers from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states, which comprise the six states in the zone,” he added.

He further explained that the training is the second in a series of six, organised by UNHCR for the North East region. The previous training, focusing essentially on Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) targeted NEMA, SEMAs, local NGOs, the Red Cross and other actors involved in CCCM, was held in Bauchi in December 2014.
