Suspect who generates fake bank alerts, statements arrested in Lagos

A serial fraudster, who specializes in generating fake bank alerts and bank statements and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public, especially business men/women in Lagos, has been arrested by the Lagos state police command.

The 33 year old suspect, Babatunde Olaogun, was arrested when he had attempted to defraud an HP laptop dealer in Lagos to the tune of about N5 million.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect had some months back being arrested for a similar offence when he impersonated the Governor of Lagos state and defrauded a retail car store identified as affordable cars of three brand new vehicles.

The suspect, who claimed to be a Micro-Biology graduate of the Lagos State University, said he had worked with several ministries of the Lagos state government before he was relieved of his appointment about two years back.

Parading the suspect in Lagos, the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, disclosed that the suspect goes to the market, request to buy items and then the last the shop owner that he want want to do online transfer. The victim will get the alert of the transfer on his phone but it won’t reflect in the account.

He had gone to buy 25 laptops from different shops, he told the shop owner to expect an alert. He make the bank alert look like it’s from the bank.

He also generates fake bank statements which he uses as supporting documents to attain loans from the banks and other financial institutions.”

The suspect however denied any intention to defraud the laptop dealer. He stated that it was a case of a business that went bad.

According to him, “I actually told the supplier, Nugalink to supply the laptops to my office in Ikeja. I also supplied them to another buyer with a promise to pay him in two weeks time.

“Things went bad when the person I supplied the laptops to couldn’t make the payment. I explained things to him and tod him to give me some more time.

“When the worry became too much, I decided to take one of my bank alerts, edit it and sent it to my phone. I then showed him on my phone that I had transfered N2.5 million out if the N4.625 million to his account.

“The truth is that I needed money to take care of a loan of N20 million I was owing someone. So I had to do all I could to source for funds.”

Owoseni noted that the Hp laptops have all been recovered from him. A Toyota Corolla has also been recovered and two other suspects arrested.

He also emphasized that the suspects will be brought to justice.
