Reps move to strengthen rights, welfare of older persons
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of older Nigerians.
He spoke Wednesday at a public hearing on the Older Persons Rights and Privileges Bill organised by the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in Abuja
Abbas, represented at the hearing by the House chief whip, Hon Usman Kumo said existing laws such as the National Senior Citizens Centre Act, 2018, do not adequately address the peculiar needs of the aged.
He noted that many older persons still face discrimination, abuse, neglect and economic hardship, pointing out that the proposed bill, seeks to provide enforceable rights and legal remedies.
The Speaker described the bill as a progressive step that tackles challenges such as poverty, poor health, loneliness and insecurity.
It also proposes free medical care in government facilities, tax exemptions, stipends and protection against abandonment.
Abbas added that the legislation would align Nigeria with international standards, including the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Older Persons.
The Committee Chairperson Hon. Kafilat Ogbara said the bill aims to guarantee essential rights for senior citizens who have contributed to national development.
She called the process “society giving back,” stressing the need to ensure dignity, respect and support for older persons.
Ogbara urged stakeholders to offer robust inputs that will strengthen the bill saying the welfare of the aged is a true measure of a nation’s values.
