Police arrest mother, daughter, man for allegedly killing a teacher

A student of Starlite Secondary School Ogidii, Idemili Local Government Area of Anambra State, Miss Chnaza Okafor, her Mother, Mrs Okafor, and a man believed to be Mrs Okafor’s lover have been arrested for beating a teacher Miss Rita Odilinye to death.

The deceased, until her death, was said to be an Igbo teacher and class mistress of Miss Okafor at Starlight Secondary school Ogidi. It was gathered that trouble started on Friday morning when the teacher came to school and found out that her class was not swept and she demanded from the students in the class why the class was not swept.

It was then that they told her that the student, Chinaza Okafor, aged about 14 years, who was supposed to sweep the class before going home the previous day after dismissal as they used to do, did not sweep it .

But trouble started when she was queried by the teacher and she was said to have defied the teacher in her response which angered the teacher and she flogged her.

It was learnt that while she was being flogged she ran out of the class and scaled the school fence as the gate was locked and went to straight to their house where she reported to her mother how she was beaten black and blue by her teacher for not sweeping the classroom.

Obviously angered, the mother of the student was said to have armed herself with sticks and accompanied her to the school with and one other person, to revenge the flogging meted to her daughter.

However, when they arrived the school, she could not see the teacher as she was said to have gone out to attend meeting of private schools which made her to swear that she ( the teacher) would have to be taught the lesson of her life.

Efforts made by the co-teachers to prevail on the woman to calm down and allow the school authority to handle the case proved abortive as she swore to revenge by herself.

However, after some time as the teacher was nowhere to be seen, the mother, daughter and the person that accompanied them to the school left the school premises and on coming out of the gate they met with the teacher who then was returning from the meeting. Immediately the daughter saw the teacher, she pointed at her, the woman pounced on the teacher like a wounded lion, flogging and beating her up with the help of her daughter and the other unidentified person and as the attack became unbearable the teacher slumped and died on instantly. As she slumped the trio fled the scene and the teacher was rushed to Iyi-Enu Mission hospital, Ogidi where she was confirmed dead.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), in charge of the Area, Mr Mark Ijarafu said, “we have arrested the mother, daughter and the other person”.

He said the corpse of the teacher has been deposited at Iyi-Enu morgue, while investigation continues.
