Ogun Speaker tasks ASUP to reposition polytechnic education

The Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Suraju Ishola Adekunbi, has charged the stakeholders in polytechnic education to be more proactive by ensuring a review of the Polytechnic Act, so as to re-position it to take its pride of place as the bedrock of technological and technical development of the nation.

Adekunbi, who gave the charge at the 84th National Executive Council meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) held at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, explained that tertiary education, especially in the polytechnics, remained a pivot of national development.

He said that the state government, under Senator Ibikunle Amosun, had accorded high priority to qualitative and affordable education, and so the allocation of over 20% of its annual budget to the sector with a view to providing enabling environment to lecturers and students to compete favourably with their colleagues across the globe.

Earlier in her address, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, described the union as a critical watchdog in the society and an engine that drove human resources, preserved cultural heritage and values of the society.
