Maryam Babangida’s Family Set for Her Memorial Lectures in Asaba

The family of the late Nigeria’s first lady, Mrs. Maryam Ndidi Babangida has commenced arrangements for her first memorial lectures in Asaba, Delta State capital.

Speaking to journalists yesterday in Asaba, the elder brother of the deceased first lady, and Chairman Board of Trustees, Amb. Leo Okogwu said that late Maryam Ndidi Babangida who died seven years ago, empowered Nigerian Women, and brought succor to them through enhanced economic and social life of Nigerian families, particularly for rural women” Unveiled in 1987.

Amb. Leo Okogwu who also is one of the organizers of the memorial lectures explained that over 300, 000 cottage industries were recorded at the nooks and cranny of Nigeria, adding that the office of the first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was brought to light by the late woman.

He said: “it was because she brought her vision, devotion and dedication to awaken the post with the ever understanding an support of her charismatic and caring husband” adding that the existence of the ministries of women affairs in the administration of the states, was taken for granted and was converted to commission for Women Affairs.

According to him, the first inaugural lecture would take place first week of November 2017 with the Theme: “The Nigerian Women before, during and After the Better life Programme for Rural Women, A salute to Her Excellency, late Dr. (Mrs.) Maryam Ndidi Babangida” as over 6, 000 persons are invited as dignitaries to the lecture.

He explained that the late first lady died so after her witness to her achievements which blossomed and were sustained, adding that upon her observation in the trends of the country, it was noted that few comparatively Nigerians appeared to remember her for her good works appeared to be receding with the ever retreating horizon

“This is very unfair, it is to arrest this trend that it was conceived, after due consultations to set up an initiative called “Maryam Ndidi Babangida Annual memorial lecture initiatives which will hold annually to remember her life and times of joys and pains serving the Nigerians women and indeed mankind” Amb. Okogwu added.

He disclosed that guest speaker at the lecture would be Dr. Fati Ibrahim whose experience in gender politics and culture had been enviable.
