Lordfrey by Godfrey releases The Ìdánìmọ̀ collection

Godfrey Omere, the creative mind behind Lordfrey by Godfrey, introduces his latest work, the ‘Ìdánìmọ̀’ collection, a homage to identity and tradition.

The Yoruba word ‘Ìdánìmọ̀,’ meaning ‘identity,’ serves as a fitting title for a collection inspired by the Nigerian musician Lagbaja.

Renowned for his use of masks to explore themes of anonymity and individuality, Lagbaja’s influence is woven into the collection’s narrative, particularly through the use of veils.

This collection offers modern interpretations of classic Nigerian clothing, such as Agbadas and Jalabiyas. The veils are not merely ornamental rather, they symbolize the tension between the seen and unseen, a concept central to Lagbaja’s artistry. By incorporating these veils, the collection invites wearers to explore their own multifaceted identities.

In terms of craftsmanship, the collection features embroidery on the cuffs and neckline that accentuates each piece, providing a polished look. The collection predominantly uses Brocade.

While Brocade is a fitting fabric choice, the absence of iconic Nigerian textiles such as Aso Oke or Adire feels like a missed opportunity. These textiles, steeped in history and tradition, could have added texture and depth, enriching the cultural narrative behind the designs.

Moreover, these fabrics were key elements in Lagbaja’s signature style. For a collection intended to honour him, their inclusion would have been expected.

The silhouettes, though rooted in traditional forms, have been redefined for contemporary audiences.

The redefined cuts offer a modern twist on traditional silhouettes, making them both stylish and wearable.

However, a wider variety of fits, from loose to tailored, could have broadened the collection’s appeal, catering to a wider audience with varying body types.

Ultimately, the ‘Ìdánìmọ̀’ collection captures the essence of Lagbaja’s mysterious and dualistic nature.

However, areas such as a broader range of fabrics and silhouettes could have been further explored to strengthen the connection to the dynamic cultural legacy it seeks to honour.
