LG boss charges women to seek elective positions

….commends Akeredolu for being gender sensitive
The chairperson of Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, Mrs. Morenike Alaka, has commended the governor of the state, ‘Arakunrin’ Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for being gender sensitive, as she charges women across the country to seek elective positions in the current democratic setting so that they can be part of decision making that will affect their lives in a positive way.

Alaka made the charge in Okitipupa, while speaking with a group of Journalists at the council secretariat.

Her words; “In this country and Africa as a whole, women had been shortchanged for so many years. We had been relegated to the background particularly when it comes to political participation, not because of anything, but as a result of our tradition and culture.

“And when we are talking about culture and gender, our culture has already dictated the role of women in our society that women are meant to be in the kitchen no matter your status,

but we thank our amiable Governor Akeredolu for deeming it fit to fully integrate women in his government, as well as being part of decision making that will affect the lives of women folks positively.

“It is generally believed that our society spelt out some roles for women that there are some things you can do and there are some you cannot do, but I totally disagree with that,”

she stressed, adding “Get to Europe and some other countries in the world, men cook for their wives, they serve them. Even when some Nigerian men travel abroad they do same, so that is to tell you that it is mere societal expectations.

“Women should therefore have the fundamental right to aspire to the highest positions of authority in the country for their aspirations to be met.

“We should forget about culture and tradition and give women the opportunity to serve like the way Governor Akeredolu is doing in Ondo State. There should be a level playing ground for both men and women for the country to move forward,” she maintained.

“Unless women are part of decision making they will continue to be vulnerable. Women and children are the most vulnerable in the society, it is when they are part of decision making that issues affecting them can be favourably resolved,” she added.
