Lagos Police arrest suspected robbers, car snatchers

In a renewed effort to keep Lagos safe, the Lagos State Police Command, Festac Division has arrested one Gabriel Godwin for robbery and for the unlawful possession of a locally made pistol.

The suspect, 23 was arrested by a team of police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer on Monday, January 15.

Our correspondent gathered that at about 2:47pm on the said day, the DPO had received a distress call concerning a robbery incident at Mile 2.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi who paraded the suspect before journalists in Lagos, “The divisional police officer Festac Division apprehended one Gabriel Godwin male with one locally made pistol cut to size. The DPO responded to a distress call at mile 2 where the suspect and another called Hawa, were attempting to rob a passerby of his motorcycle. On sighting the DPO, they fled and the DPO gave them a hot pursuit and arrested them.”

The suspect also confessed to the crime and disclosed he had been involved in the act since 2015.

Similarly, policemen attached to Maroko Division have also recovered an Uber car which was snatched at gunpoint by a six man robbery gang.

Edgal said, “One Michael now at large asked his girlfriend to flag down an Uber taxi cab. When the cap stopped, the said Michael and his friends jumped into the car and at gun point snatched the car.

“However due to diligence on the part of the DPO and his men, the car has not only been recovered but the following suspects involved in that crime have been arrested.

“They are: Agboye Avokere 25, Collins Okoro 27, Okpe John 26 years, Tijani Ibrahim; 31, Oyenuga Sodique; 34 years. All suspects will be charged to court,” he stated.

In a related development, Edagal also revealed that a team of Anti -Cultism led by an officer on a tip off had stormed an uncompleted building in Araro area of Ikorodu where a group of boys suspected to be cultist were performing an initiation rite.

He said, “On getting there the boys saw the police and naturally ran to different directions. Two of the boys were arrested. Seasan Onatola, 27 and Kehinde Olusola 26 years. Items recovered from the suspected cultists are 3 pump action riffles, four live cartridges, one cutlass and one iron rods.”

The CP noted that all the suspects will be charged to court and diligently prosecuted.

He also revealed that intelligence at the command’s disposal revealed that some unscrupulous elements are bent on attempting to truncate the peace being enjoyed in Lagos.

“We know Lagos state is one of the most peaceful states in the country today and I want to urge members of the public to continue to partner with the police to keep the state safe.”
