JUST IN: 9mobile rebrands to T2, adopts new orange identity

Telecom operator 9mobile has rebranded to T2, changing its name and adopting orange as its new corporate colour.

The unveiling took place at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, during the company’s “Tech Meets Tenacity” event.

Obafemi Banigbe, chief executive officer of T2, said the transformation was aimed at positioning the company as a leader in the industry.

“This change is necessary for us to give our best. We are not playing a catch-up, but to lead in the industry,” he said.

The event drew a large audience of industry stakeholders, including Bosun Tijani, minister of communications and digital economy.

It was hosted by entertainment icon Darey Art Alade and featured performances from several music artistes.

From Etisalat to 9mobile, Now T2

9mobile, formerly Etisalat Nigeria, entered the Nigerian market in 2008 under Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. (EMTS) after securing a unified access service licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission in 2007.

The company reached a subscriber peak of 22 million between 2014 and 2016.

However, the exit of its initial investors triggered financial challenges, reduced infrastructure investment, and a sharp drop in its customer base — from 22 million to 3.2 million as of January 2025.

In July 2017, it rebranded from Etisalat Nigeria to 9mobile to reflect a Nigerian identity.

Banigbe said recent moves, such as a national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, are part of efforts to revitalise the brand by expanding coverage and improving service quality.
