JED To Install 100,000 smart meters

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED), with franchise in Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe and Benue states, has rolled out a total of 180,000 smart meters as part of its metering scheme and to Install about 100,000 in its franchise states by January 2017.

Speaking with newsmen in Jos, at the flag off of the installation exercise, the Managing Director, JED, Mohammed Gidado Modibbo, said that the smart meters will help consumers to remotely monitor the level of their consumption unlike the prepaid meter. His words: “We have rolled out 180,000 meters this year sometimes in April this year as part of our metering plan and we have received the first barge; between now and January 2017 it is expected that we should have installed at least close to 100,000 smart meters. “The meters will be installed on the pools to guarantee its safety and supply of energy and also to ensure that consumers pay for what they consume.

“Smart meters will enable us to remotely monitor consumers consumption and to enable us to also remotely disconnect or connect electricity without coming to go up the pool. “The smart meter enables database integration easier for an effective and efficient service delivery even for the benefit of our customers because its more dependable and reliable”.

Modibbo also said that the smart meter will save the company a lot of cost in sending manpower to the streets to check and fix problems in terms of turn around maintenance even without the customer complaining because the smart meter device will automatically notify the company. The JED boss also said that before the end of 2017, the company would have install 250,000 smart meters across its franchise states. However, a customer who is already enjoying the smart meter, told journalists that the smart meter device is more efficient than the prepaid meter because of its slow billing system.
