Insecurity: Nigeria is in a critical situation, says, Defence minister

Major General Salihi Magashi (rtd), the Minister of Defence, hinted on Monday that Nigeria is in a critical situation as a result of resurgent terrorist attacks, banditry, and kidnappings across the country.

He did, however, believe that the country’s security issues necessitate the civilian population’s support and cooperation in the national task of securing the country.

“We are in a critical situation that requires the understanding, buy-in, support, and collaboration of important stakeholders and key players in this strategic option,” the Minister said at a National Defence and Security Summit organized by the Defence Headquarters with the theme ‘Promoting Kinetic Operations as a Major Plank for Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency in Nigeria.’

To promote operational success and mission outcomes, it is critical to eliminate distractions and maximize civil support.”

“This Summit comes at a sobering time in the life of our dear nation,” he continued. A time when violent merchants threaten to shatter our nation’s very foundations; a time when various manifestations of security threats dot the landscape and have troubling effects on individuals, communities, and almost all sub-national entities; a time when fear and uncertainty pervade the land; and a time when global indicators of national insecurity give room for serious concern.

“Physical insecurity in Nigeria has both forward and backward links to various shades and forms of national security, which is surprising.

Political instability, economic underdevelopment, and social inequalities are all related to it. Food insecurity and cumulative environmental degradation are two others. These examples demonstrate the multi-faceted nature of national insecurity.

“In light of these realities, the Federal Government of Nigeria has used a multi-lateral approach with our contiguous neighbors over the years, as well as multi-dimensional domestic efforts.
