How Benue State University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology will transform education and agriculture

By Dooyum Naadzenga

The establishment of the Benue State University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology (BSUAST), Ihugh, is a landmark achievement that reflects visionary leadership, collaborative governance, and a strong commitment to reshaping Nigeria’s educational and agricultural landscapes.

Located in Benue State’s Vandeikya Local Government Area, the institution embodies a bold initiative aimed at addressing urgent challenges, promoting innovation, and redefining academia’s role in fostering sustainable development.

BSUAST is not just a university; it represents a dynamic force for community empowerment, scientific advancement, and positioning Benue State as a global leader in agricultural excellence.

At the helm of this transformative project is Governor Hyacinth Alia, whose administration has embraced BSUAST as a cornerstone of its development agenda.

Acknowledging Benue’s reputation as Nigeria’s “Food Basket,” Governor Alia envisioned an institution that would modernize agricultural practices, bridge the gap between theory and practical application, and equip future generations with essential skills to confront 21st-century challenges. His leadership has been pivotal in shaping the university’s mission, securing stakeholder support, and ensuring that its establishment aligns with broader national goals of economic diversification and food security.

The legislative arm of Benue State’s government also played a crucial role in actualizing BSUAST. Under the leadership of Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh, the Benue State House of Assembly expedited the bill to establish the university, showcasing bipartisan support for this initiative. Lawmakers such as Douglas Akya and Saater Tiseer were vocal proponents, emphasizing the institution’s potential to generate employment, stimulate rural development, and position Benue as a center for agricultural research. Their efforts highlighted the urgency of addressing systemic shortcomings in Nigeria’s educational system, where specialized institutions are vital for fostering innovation and addressing sector-specific challenges.

The path to BSUAST’s creation was not without obstacles. Critics raised doubts about the feasibility of establishing a new university in a region already home to institutions like the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (formerly the University of Agriculture, Makurdi). However, Governor Alia and his team countered these concerns by emphasizing BSUAST’s unique focus on applied research, technology integration, and community-driven solutions. They argued that the university would complement existing institutions rather than compete with them, creating a robust ecosystem of specialized education tailored to Benue’s agricultural and economic needs.

Strategically located in Ihugh, BSUAST’s site choice is both symbolic and practical. The region’s fertile land and proximity to agricultural hubs provide an ideal environment for hands-on learning and research. Students will engage in fieldwork, collaborate with local farmers, and develop solutions to challenges such as soil degradation, irrigation management, and crop diversification. This immersive approach ensures that graduates are not only academically prepared but also grounded in the realities of rural development.

The university’s curriculum is crafted to address Nigeria’s most pressing challenges. Programs in agricultural science, biotechnology, renewable energy, and agribusiness will equip students with the tools to innovate and adapt to evolving global demands.

Professor Qrissturberg Amua, a seasoned academic and a leading promoter of the BSUAST spoke to the Daily Times last week in Makurdi said, “by integrating cutting-edge technologies like precision farming and climate-smart agriculture, BSUAST aims to revolutionize Benue’s agricultural sector, ensuring higher yields, reduced waste, and sustainable practices”.

“Beyond academics, BSUAST is poised to serve as an economic catalyst. The institution will generate direct and indirect job opportunities, from faculty positions to roles in allied sectors such as agro-processing and technology. Its emphasis on entrepreneurship will empower graduates to launch startups, partner with local communities, and contribute to poverty alleviation. Governor Alia has underscored that BSUAST will act as a springboard for Benue’s youth, equipping them with skills to thrive in a competitive global economy”.

The impact of BSUAST will extend far beyond Benue State. Nigeria faces mounting pressures, including population growth, climate change, and food insecurity. By advancing research in disease-resistant crops, efficient irrigation systems, and sustainable land use, the university will play a crucial role in ensuring the resilience of the nation’s agricultural sector. Its focus on science and technology also positions it to tackle broader challenges, such as renewable energy adoption and environmental conservation, fostering a greener future for generations to come.

Internationally, BSUAST is set to become a model for African institutions. Its specialized curriculum and collaborative ethos invite partnerships with global universities, research centers, and organizations. By sharing knowledge and best practices, the university can inspire similar initiatives across the continent, reinforcing Africa’s role as a leader in agricultural innovation.

Critics may question the feasibility of such an ambitious project, but BSUAST’s foundation is built on foresight. The institution’s leadership is dedicated to transparency, accountability, and community involvement, ensuring that its growth remains inclusive and sustainable. “Challenges related to infrastructure development and funding are being proactively addressed through strategic planning and stakeholder engagement”, Amua said.

In essence, BSUAST stands as a powerful testament to visionary leadership and collective action. It embodies Nigeria’s potential to reimagine education, agriculture, and technology as interconnected pillars of progress. By nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and empowering communities, this institution promises to leave an indelible mark on Benue State, Nigeria, and the world. As the nation navigates the complexities of the 21st century, BSUAST is prepared to lead the charge toward a brighter, more sustainable future.
