HND II Student, 17, Arraigned for Fraud, Dupes American $4,500
A 17 year-old student and teenager from Alowonle Adigbe, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Ojosipe Adedayo, was, on Tuesday, arraigned before Justice Atinuke Ipaye of an Ikeja High Court, Lagos, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on two count charge of “possession of a document containing false pretences and forgery.”
According to the charge:“Ojosipe(a.k.a. Marty Jason and Candice), on or about May 8,2014, in Lagos, had in your possession a document in which you represented yourself to be a single lady, called Candice from Trenton, New Jersey, United States, who helps the needy to organise charity concerts and also help the homeless to get funds for Motherless Babies Home, which representations you knew to be false.”
According to the prosecution, the accused was alleged to have confessed to receiving the sum of $2, 000 from one American, Adam Denborsky, who lives in the United States of America, through Western Union money transfer, having met the victim on facebookand he (Ojosipe) posed as 30 year old Marty Jason from Pennyslyvania, U.S.A. on a facebook account which he uses ‘ for fraud.’
He was also alleged to have confessed to using the money to buy a phone and cloths.
His accomplice, 24-year-old Owolabi Ahmed (a.k.a Candice Skye), an HND II Electrical and Electronics student of MoshoodAbiola Polytechnic, Ogun State, was also arraigned on three count charge.
He was alleged to have “represented yourself to be a single girl called Candice Skye from the U.S.A., who lost her parents in a car accident, currently engaged in gemstome business and need the sum of $2,500 to enable you obtain an authorisation letter required by the customs and excise services to clear your good, which representations you knew to be false.”
According to the prosecution, E. A. Jackson, the offence was contrary to Section 6,8(b) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act.No. 14 of 2006.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Justice Ipaye, however, directed that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjournedtheir till May 21,2015, for hearing of their bail applications.
