Group calls for investigation of arrest of Peace Corps Commandant

The Civil Societies Organisations (CSOs) under the umbrella of Coalition of Concerned Minority Citizens for Equity, Justice and Good Governance as well as Benue Youth Advance Frontier and other civil society groups, have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to set up a committee with
view to investigating the arrest and detention of the Commandant General of Nigeria Peace Corps, Ambassador Dickson Akor.
Addressing a joint press conference in Makurdi, the Benue state capital last Tuesday, spokesman of the CSOs Comrade Eloyi Ogbe described the arrest of Akor and 49 officers of the corps by the Police as a show of “Power intoxication with high level of misguided bias, envy and malicious phantasm allegations.”
According to the groups, the intention t is to “Malign the good programms of the Peace Corps out of sheer envy and ignorance.”
They further described the arrest and detention as “Callous and uncivilised act of recklessness exhibited by the officers of the Nigeria Police Force” noting that it is an “Affront against the parliamentary institution under whose watch and collective agreement the Police itself was founded.”
According to Eloyi, the allegations by the Police that the Peace Corps is engaging in military training of its members is simply to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it.
While expressed confidence in the President Mohammadu Buhari to look into the matter, the CSOs spokesman said “PMB has proved beyond reasonable doubt that he is a listening President. We don’t believe that he will shot his ears to the cries of youth whom he enjoyed their support in the 2015 general elections.”
