‘FG committed to gas emission reduction in transport sector’

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to fostering an environment conducive to decreasing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.
He made this disclosure in his address at the 86th Inland Transport Committee Conference on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the Transport Sector.
The conference, themed, ‘Taking Ambitious Climate Action – Moving Towards Decarbonised Inland Transport by 2050’, was convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
The Minister highlighted the critical need to address the adverse environmental effects resulting from transportation activities.
He emphasised the significant contribution of the transportation sector, particularly road, rail, and inland waterways, to greenhouse gas emissions and the consequential threats posed to the environment and public health.

He, however, called for collaborative efforts and decisive actions to mitigate these emissions and transition towards a sustainable transport system.
“The government of Nigeria pledged to continue creating enabling conditions to support greenhouse gas reduction initiatives in the transport sector, emphasisng the importance of implementing strategies encompassing technological innovation, regulatory measures, and international cooperation”, he said.
The Minister, who underscored the essential role of international collaboration in addressing the global challenge of inland transport emissions, urged stakeholders on active engagement and feedback to refine and strengthen collective responses to the pressing global issue.
