EU, German government supports 5 manufacturing coys to attain ISO certification

Philip Clement, Abuja

The European Union (EU) in collaboration with the German government has successfully supported five Nigerian companies to attain the International Standard Organization certification.

Since 2013 the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), a technical assistance programme, co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Government, and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power, has been supporting the implementation of Energy Management Systems (EnMS) and Energy Efficiency Networks in the Nigerian Manufacturing Sector.

The support aims at fostering energy savings in manufacturing companies, thereby reducing CO2 emissions to achieve the Nigerian climate targets under the Paris Agreement.

The Energy Efficiency Network is a platform that avails manufacturers with opportunities to discover profitable energy efficiency measures to save energy, reduce energy cost and achieve CO2 emissions reduction.

The participating companies of the three established Energy Efficiency Networks in Nigeria have continued to benefit from NESP’s support on the implementation of Energy Management Systems (EnMS) based on ISO 50001 standard.

“The ISO 50001 EnMS Standard is a globally accepted framework for managing energy, providing technical and management strategies to increase energy efficiency, reducing energy costs, and improving environmental performance.

It enables organisations to establish systems and processes necessary to reduce their energy consumption”, said Ms Inga Stefanowicz, Head of Section of Economic Cooperation and Energy at the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS.

In 2017, NESP supported Aarti Steel Ota and Grand Cereals Jos to achieve certification in ISO 50001 standard, making them the first two companies to achieve the certification in Nigeria.

To further promote an increase of energy efficiency practices in the Nigerian manufacturing sector, NESP recently supported five additional companies namely, PZ Cussons Ikorodu, GB Foods Gbagada, Nigerian Foundries Ota, Dangote Cement Ibese and Golden Sugar Apapa to achieve the certification in ISO 50001 EnMS Standard.

The companies were presented their ISO 50001:2018 EnMS Certificates.

The certification is a proof that the Energy Management System of the companies comply with the requirements of UNE-ISO 50001:2018 standard.

“As a result of the energy performance improvements realised in these companies, NESP plans to support more manufacturing companies participating in the Energy Efficiency Networks to achieve certification in ISO 50001 EnMS standard and to contribute to an efficient and environmentally friendly energy performance”, announced Duke Benjamin, Head of Programme, NESP.
