A coalition of civil society organisations and transparency, The Situation Room has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately constitute a special commission of Inquiry into the financial activities of Nigeria’s oil company.

The coalition stated that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL’s activities over the past five years under the leadership of its immediate past Managing Director, MD Mele Kyari must be made public.

At a press conference in Abuja Wednesday, the group’s convener, Michael Omoba stated that the commission being proposed must be empowered to subpoena documents, summon key stakeholders involved under the duration in question and make binding recommendations.

“We strongly believe that a proper investigation, followed by judicial action, will send a strong message that Nigeria is ready to do business within the parameters of accountability.

“We are confident that such an investigation will definitely serve as a deterrent to future intending corrupt leaders, and also a catharsis to help cleanse the rot embedded in the operations of our nation’s public assets”.

They also demanded for a forensic audit of all NNPCL financial transactions carried out in the years under review and an open publication of the list of beneficiaries involved in the 80 million barrels allegedly given to non-state actors.

Equally important is “A breakdown with the full report on how $1.5 billion was spent on the Port Harcourt refinery and an interrogation, followed by possible prosecution of Mele Kyari, dismissed board members, and other NNPCL executives found culpable among others” he said.

The coalition further proposed a legislative oversight hearing to make sure that the National Assembly, NASS maintains the highest transparency requirements for the newly appointed NNPCL board.

According to the group, its call for action is not driven by vendetta or vengeance but on its burning patriotic desire to see Nigeria become a developed and prosperous nation that makes good use of its natural resources through committed, transparent and accountable leaders.
