Commissioner seeks FG’s intervention for 1, 000 flood sites in A’Ibom

The Akwa Ibom state Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ekong Sampson, has identified over 1, 000 flood sites in the state and has appealed to the federal government to assist the state to tackle the flood menace that has ravaged parts of the state.

Speaking in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital on Monday, Sampson explained that erosion control works have already commenced at Annua community in Uyo, being handled by Nigerpet Construction Company and IBB Way in Uyo respectively.

“Erosion intervention is going on at Annua executed by Nigerpet Construction Company. The company is working day and night to meet up the deadline before the rainy season sets in. Another one is going on at IBB Way,” he disclosed.

He said the state government is working closely with the World Bank and willing to partner any donor agency to check flood menace in the state.

He mentioned some of the flood sites in the state to include Atiku Abubakar Way in Uyo, 2 Lane and Itu Road as well as other local government areas in the state.

The commissioner reiterated Governor Udom Emmanuel’s commitment to clean and healthy environment as the state is adjudged to be the best in terms of cleanliness.

He appealed to the federal government to bail out the state by providing funds to check other erosion sites in the state capital and other local government areas.

He said such intervention can be done through NEWMAP and disbursement of ecological funds to the state for erosion control.
