Centre honours Turkish schools over performance at Mathematics Olympiad

The National Mathematics Centre (NMC) has commended and honoured the management of the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges (NTIC) for the performance of its students at the recently concluded International Mathematics and Physics Olympiad.

The Turkish schools had won five medals of the six won by Nigerian schools at the recent international competitions, held in Europe and Asia last year.

Speaking at the award presentation ceremony of the National Mathematical Centre at the Ladi Kwali Hall of Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, Chief Executive Officer of the centre, Prof Adewale Solarin, expressed satisfaction with the instructional system put in place by the management of the schools, which resulted in its students’ top-of-the-world performances at local and international competitions.

According to Prof. Solarin: “I am very impressed with the kind of system NTIC has in place, so I am not surprised that we have to celebrate their achievements.”

The Mathematics Centre’s Director, however, charged the management of the schools not to rest on their oars in bringing further improvements to the schools.

Prof Solarin also commended the partnership between the centre and NTIC, saying that the symbiotic collaboration had led to enormous gains in stimulating students’ interests in Mathematics.

He continued: “NTIC has been a formidable partner of NMC. If we want to look at the achievements we have had so far in international competitions, starting from Pan-African Olympiad, NTIC contributed significantly to the numbers of medals we have.

“If we look at the International Mathematics and Physics Olympiad, in which we had six medals so far, five of the medals can be credited to NTIC,” he added.

Also at the event, Minister of State for Education, Professor Viola Onwuliri, who presented the awards to the schools, praised the management of NTIC for ensuring that quality students emerge from there.

The minister, represented by the Director, Basic and Secondary Education, in the ministry, Bar. Chike Uwazuoke, explained that the emergence of NTIC as winners at the international competitions was a result of commitment and dedication on the part of the management of the schools. He called on them to continue in that light.

While receiving the award for the school, Group Managing Director of NTIC, Mehmet Basturk, reiterated the commitment of the school to excellent education delivery to its students.
