Biafra: I trekked from Enugu to Anambra – Igbo Chieftain

By Kingsley Chukwuka
It was not a good experience to remember as we all form a queue with our loads on our head and trekked over 300 kilometre from Enugu to Anambra running from the war as it hits Enugu, says a Jos based Igbo Chieftain, Dr. Faith Onyema.
Recounting his experience during the 1967 Nigeria’s Biafra war which lasted for three years Onyema said he pray the sad tale never repeat itself.
Speaking to our correspondent in Jos, Onyema who is also a leader of the Igbo people in Jos South said he lost three of his elder brothers in the unfortunate war.
“Three of my elder brothers were killed during the civil war: but I managed to survive it. With today set aside, we remember these people and others who lost their lives in the war”, Onyema said.
The Igbo Chieftain said he will not advise the south eastern region to drift into another war. “If you witness the civil war, you will not want to see Nigeria drift into another war”, he said.
However proffering solution to the lingering agitation of secession by the south east region and other regions of the country, Onyema said Nigerian government should champion a round table discussion to forge a way forward.
“Since everyone is talking about constitution review and restructuring, let us sit together on a round table and discuss it, for peace to rain”, the Igbo Chieftain said.
