ASUU To Embark On Warning Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the University of Jos (UNIJOS), yesterday, came out of a congress resolving to monitor the total implementation of the one-week warning strike declared by the national body of the association.
The national body, Monday, declared the strike action over the failure by the federal government to implement the 2009 agreement, as well as the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the association on sundry issues including welfare packages.
Specifically, the agreements are: Payments of staff entitlements since December 2015, funding of universities for revitalisation, pension, TSA and university autonomy and renegotiation of 2009 Agreement.
The congress by the association at UNIJOS informed members of the declaration, during which it was unanimously resolved that the branch will join the national warning strike commencing today.
Dr. Christopher Piwuna, told newsmen at the end of the congress that members also resolved that the branch executive committee was automatically dissolved collapsed into a monitoring committee to see to the total implementation of the action.
“We just ended the congress where our members unanimously resolved to join the national warning strike. By 12 midnight, we are commencing the strike here in UNIJOS. The executive is part of a committee to monitor total compliance, during which there will not be lectures, examinations; no meetings during the week of the strike,” Dr. Piwuna said.
Members left the congress chanting solidarity songs to signal their preparation for the strike.
