27 farmers killed in Plateau laid to rest in mass burial

Twenty-seven victims of a deadly attack by gunmen in Bindi-Jebbu village, Riyom local government area of Plateau state, were buried on Friday in a mass funeral marked by tears, anguish, and a call for justice.

The victims—mostly farmers, including women and men—were killed in the early hours of July 15 when armed men invaded the quiet rural community in Riyom.

Many others were injured in their sleep, and survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

During the solemn burial ceremony, Bature Shuwa, chairman of Riyom LGA, described the killings as a “cruel and senseless act of violence” that has left families shattered and the community in mourning.

“My people of Bindi-Jebu and the greater Riyom community, we are gathered here today in unspeakable grief, hearts heavy with sorrow, to mourn our brothers and sisters—twenty-seven precious lives, cut down in a cruel and senseless act of violence in the early hours of July 15th, 2025,” Shuwa said.

“As your chairman, I stand with you not only in leadership but in deep mourning. I cannot begin to imagine the pain, the silence in your homes, or the weight of these empty spaces left behind.”

Shuwa said the victims must be remembered not just as casualties, but as members of the community—fathers, mothers, children, neighbours, and farmers—whose lives were unjustly taken.

“To the immediate bereaved families: no words can truly comfort you, but please know that your pain is ours; your loss, a wound in the heart of all of Riyom people,” he said.

“Let their memories stir in us a renewed commitment to justice, peace, and security. We will not forget. We will not be silent. And we will not rest until our communities are safe.”

The chairman also appreciated the prompt visit of Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang to the community shortly after the attack, describing it as a “gesture of compassion” that gave solace to grieving families.

“Your presence, Your Excellency, was not only a gesture of compassion but a statement of solidarity that brought comfort to many broken hearts in Riyom. We will not forget the love you have shown us. Indeed, you are truly a father,” he said.

Shuwa also thanked the state government delegation present at the burial for standing with the people in their moment of grief.

“May the God of all comfort wrap His arms around every grieving soul today. May the Bindi-Jebu community rise again in unity, strength, and hope,” he said.
