Bayelsa elders halt succession crisis in IYC

Akam James, Yenagoa

Bayelsa elders under the guise of the Ijaw Youth Elders Advisory Council have intervened and halted a possible crisis among Ijaw youth in the central zone over who occupies the chairmanship position following the election of the incumbent, Tare Porri, as a member of the state House of Assembly representing Ekeremor Constituency 2.

The succession battle which has heightened tension among Ijaw youth in the central zone, was due to the non-availability of a transition plan on how to choose a successor.

The Elders’ Advisory Council under the Chairmanship of Mike Wenobowei, set up a 10-man committee headed by Elder Warri Welman, to shop for a credible replacement for Porri from the Sagbama/Ekeremor axis to complete the remaining period of his tenure.

Speaking yesterday in Yenagoa while submitting the 7-page report to the IYC Elders Advisory Council, the Chairman of the committee, Comrade Warri Welman, noted that the committee consulted widely and that superior argument prevailed in the choice of three candidates, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, Miss Emi Egbe and Thomas Tenkiri to vie for the vacant position before Comrade Thomas Tenkiri eventually emerged as the chosen candidate.

Receiving the committee’s report, Chairman of the Elders Advisory Council, Mike Kenibowei, said the committee reached out to all concerned, including the state governor and the outgoing chairman.

“The decision to intervene on the issue of succession was done in good faith and to save the IYC central zone,” he said.
