YALI 2016: GKLF founder, Matilda, others to represent Africa
Founder of the George Kerry Life Foundation (GKLF), Matilda George-Osazuwa has been selected along side other Nigerians to represent Africa in the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.
The flagship programme of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) which begun in 2014 empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking.
This year, the Fellowship will provide 1,000 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home.
Each Mandela Washington Fellow takes part in a six-week academic and leadership Institute at a U.S. university or college in one of three tracks: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, or Public Management.
Upon returning to their home countries, Fellows continue to build the skills they have developed during their time in the United States through support from U.S. embassies, four Regional Leadership Centers, the YALI Network, and customized programming from USAID and affiliated partners.
George-Osazuwa said, “Hopefully I can gain skills to implement and expand my ongoing cervical cancer campaign and further empower Nigerian women to take responsibility for their health”
The George Kerry Life Foundation (GKLF) is established to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases in Africa by providing accessible, affordable and people centred health awareness, screening and training services to communities
Since its inception in 2006, the foundation has run health education and intervention programmes that have positively impacted the lives of community dwellers with .programmes varying from health awareness to cervical cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer screening programmes, including stroke, Diabetes and Hypertension awareness and prevention.
