When Umuahia daughters honour Abians, support widows

It was an atmosphere of joy and excitement as Umuahia daughters inaugurated its association in Umuahia, along with awards to deserving Abians.

Under the name, Ugo-Umuahia Daughters International (UUDI), the group seeks to “bring all distinguished daughters of the five clans of Umuahia, (Umuokpara, ibeku, Ohuhu, Olokoro, and Ubakala) under one umbrella, with the vision over “the plight of widows and the less privileged youths” in the society.

In her address, the President of the group Lady Ifeoma Ezebuiro said “To this end, we decided to be a helping hand to alleviate the burden of these widows and youths”, noting, “in our short time existence, we have been able to impact formidably on a lot of indigent widows and their children”.

It would be recalled that its branch I Texas, USA had donated two units of incubator worth millions of naira to the Amachara Specialist Hospital, Umuahia recently as well as grinding machines to the Compassionate Motherless Babies Home at Ahiaeke, Umuahia.

The group therefore promised to compliment the efforts of the Texas branch by donating a Lister Generating Set to help power the incubators and appealed for assistance from philanthropists.

Speaking during the occasion, the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman in the state, Chief Sir Johnson Okebalam Onuigbo described the occasion as “joyful and a good thing that the women of Umuahia has gathered together to project Umuahia as the capital of the state, provide succour to the needy, and to raise women to the service of God and humanity”.

He charged them to put God first in all they do and to ensure that nothing stands between them and the objectives of the association.

Speaking, some of the awardees, including a surgeon by profession, Professor Joshua Chingozi Ogbonnaya, member representing Umunneochi in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Prince Ezekwesili acknowledged the resolve of the women to come together for the good of mankind, stating that the awards will spur them into more service to humanity.

The occasion was marked with the cutting of cake and cultural dances from children

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the occasion and CEO of Okey Technical Coy Ltd, Deacon Okey Onyemauwa, assured the women of his assistance while urging them to continue to render selfless services to humanity.

He called on others to join in what he called “noble initiative”.
