Warri-Itakpe rail corridor safe, fully operational, NRC debunks viral claim

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has debunked a viral social media post claiming that the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor is unsafe for travel.
The message, which has been widely circulated online, includes a video showing a section of railway tracks with some clips allegedly removed. It warns passengers to cancel travel plans and avoid the corridor, citing safety concerns.
However, in a swift response on Monday, the NRC described the information as false, misleading, and aimed at causing unnecessary panic among the public.
According to a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Public Relations, Mr. Callistus Unyimadu, the video in question captured an isolated incident where some rail clips were temporarily removed at a particular location. He explained that the issue was discovered during routine inspection and was immediately fixed by the Corporation’s maintenance team.
“All necessary safety and operational protocols were followed. The Warri-Itakpe train (WITS) has since passed through the section without any incident, which confirms that the corridor is safe,” the statement read in part.
The NRC assured Nigerians that the Warri-Itakpe route, like all other rail corridors under its management, remains safe, secure, and fully operational.

“Our tracks and rolling stock are constantly monitored and maintained. Our personnel are well trained and ready to respond swiftly to any issues that may arise,” Unyimadu added.
The Corporation urged the public to disregard the false alarm and continue using the train services without fear, warning that attempts to spread fear and misinformation about rail transport are counterproductive and should be condemned.
“For accurate information, passengers are advised to rely only on verified NRC communication channels,” he concluded.
