WAR AGAINST FAKE PRODUCTS: SON RAIDS WUSE MARKET, ABUJA

In its efforts to stamp out the menace of substandard products to
secure the lives of consumers in the country, The Standard
Organizations of Nigeria (SON) has whiled its stick to corrupt traders
in and around the Federal capital territory, confiscating various
substandard goods including Foods items, beverages, clothing, razor
blades and shaving sticks.
Officials of the FCT branch office of SON headed by Dr. Bartholomew
Ugwu said the market raid of substandard goods would send strong
signal to its manufacturers and traders who are bent on sharp
practices.
Explaining that the raid was in continuance of SON campaign against
substandard items, he disclosed that the organization also arrested
some of the traders suspected to be behind the menace.
While fielding questions from journalists during the raid at Wuse
Market on Tuesday, Ugwu insisted that the exercise was necessary to
issue a warning signal to some people who are involved in the sharp
practices adding that they would be brought to book.
“We have been enlightening the public and this is a way to ensure that
the organization can bark and bite at the same time. The market raid
is to send signal to people that it is no more business as usual,” he
said.
He therefore urged consumers to always ensure that they only buy NIS
mark of quality.
One of the traders, Alhaji Aliyu Wada admitted that he was aware that
some of the shaving sticks confiscated from his shop at Wuse Market
were of low quality because “some of the shaving sticks break when
been used.”
Similarly, another trader, Bello Shuabu, said he knew that the
products confiscated were all of bad quality but was out of the
country to Saudi Arabia when the goods were delivered t him by the
manufacturer.
