WAPCo commissions $200,000 health centre in Ajido community

… hands it over to Lagos State government

As part of fulfilling its social responsibilities to its host community, the West African Gas Pipeline Company, WAPCo, has commissioned a well-built and modern health center worth over $200,000 in Ajido community, Badagry, Lagos State.

The Commissioning which held last week, was witnessed by staff of WAPCo in Nigeria and from Ghana, including the Managing Director, Walter Perez, representative of the Lagos State Government, Special Adviser on Public Health, Community and Communication, and Environment, Dr. Femi Onanuga, Aholu of Ajido Kingdom, HRH Aholu Topon Toyiagi 1, and members of the community.

The event which had side attractions such as dance from community masquerades, Sangbeto, saw inspections of the over $200,000 worth new facility by various representatives in attendance, after which WAPCo handed it over to both the community and Lagos State Government.

Speaking at the event, the Aholu of Ajido Kingdom, HRH Aholu Topon Toyiagi 1, expressed his joy in appreciation to WAPCo.

“We are proud of your remarkable achievement in the provision of essential social services through Lagos State,” HRH said.
On Sunday, July 24, 2016, representatives of Lagos State expressed the intention of the state to take over the community Health Clinic and convert it into a health Centre. Afterwards, the management of WAPCo was then contacted to renovate and provide necessary facilities to the health center.

Also speaking, Dr. Femi Onanuga said that the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, is ready to deploy health staff to the community, and to provide other necessary equipment and support.

WAPCo MD, Walter Perez said the handing over occasion was a “happy one ” for the company, especially since it will give the people access to good health care.

“We spent over $200,000 on this project because it is part of WAPCo plans in our host community. So for us, it makes sense to invest here.”

He hinted that the company also invest in other projects such as building and renovating markets, Public toilets, boreholes, schools and so on.

Speaking on the current state of its pipelines in Nigeria, Perez said business has been affected by militancy in the Niger Delta, hoping that the situation will be addressed soon so that businesses can bounce back.

On whether the company is prepared to take up challenges of gas boom envisaged in the nearest future he said, “I believe the company is well positioned. We are operational in four countries so, we are ready for the market.”

He also hinted of the company’s trip to Cotonou this week, saying top among what will be discussed will be the expansion of its pipelines.
