Unsolicited SMS: NCC launches TV commercial to aid campaign

As part of efforts of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to protect subscribers from unsolicited messages, the NCC has launched a television commercial that will air on major national television networks and local stations nationwide from March 26, 2018.
The NCC made this known in a statement made available to journalists on Monday, adding that the commercial will fearture comedian, Helen Paul, and Kanywood actor, Ali Nuhu.
The Daily Times recalls that in a bid to give subscribers the freedom to reject or receive messages from telcos, the NCC had directed all service providers to activate the “DO NOT DISTURB” facility since July 1, 2016 which gives subscribers the freedom to choose what messages to receive from the various networks.
Also, NCC had warned that service providers in Nigeria may pay over N16billion in fines annually as compensation for sending unsolicited messages and calls to subscribers.
According to NCC, a toll free number operated by NCC will be revealed in the said commercial to enable consumers direct complaints service providers have failed to address to the commission for resolution, adding that 622 complaints platforms have been provided by the commission.
