Unimaid prostest: Female students allegedly harassed in Maiduguri

Following a demonstration over the institution’s tuition fee increase, many female students at the University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) were hurt.

On Monday, students were claimed to have staged a peaceful protest against the institution’s management for raising tuition costs.

Many female students had joined their male classmates in the protest, according to eyewitnesses, when security personnel assaulted the area, ostensibly to disperse the demonstrators with minimal force while arresting many.

Female student confirms to Metro Times that the institution raised the tuition rate by $5,000 while the university suffers from insufficient electricity and water availability, she said.

“I was completely sexually harassed by security men while the demonstration was going on, and I was also placed in the school prison for fighting for my right,” another victim stated.

While in the school prison, I witnessed sick female students being tortured by the institution’s security guys; they stole our ID cards and abused us for exercising our right to protest.

“I am really dissatisfied with the management of the University of Maiduguri; what wrong have we done by asking for a reduction in tuition fees and requesting improvements in light and water?”

We are merely opposing the hike in tuition fees; the rest of the world is aware of the insurgency in the state that has cast a pall over our lives at the university, she continued.

Another eyewitness told Metro Times that the Institution security guys sexually harassed the majority of female students, and that while the demonstration was going on, the security men stripped some female students naked in public.

According to reports, the school administration has revoked the female protesters’ bed space at the institution due to their peaceful protest.
