Akpabio congratulates Senate over Appeal Court affirmation of Natasha’s suspension
The president of the senate, Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated lawmakers following the Court of Appeal’s decision upholding the suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking at the opening of an emergency plenary session on Monday, Akpabio described the ruling as a landmark judgment that affirms the authority of the senate as provided for under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He said the verdict confirms the legislature’s constitutional power to discipline its members when necessary.
“The court has confirmed that the senate has the power to discipline any erring lawmaker. I just want to congratulate you,” Akpabio told senators.
Meanwhile, the senate has begun the process of reversing its decision on section 3 of the Electoral Act 2026, which was passed during plenary last Thursday.
Leading the move, Tahir Monguno, chief whip of the senate, invoked Order 1(b) to reopen the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting in a bid to amend the earlier resolution.
The upper chamber is now considering a clarification of the disputed wording in the clause on the mode of result declaration, particularly the distinction between the terms “transfer” and “transmit”.
