U.S. Embassy in Nigeria to close today

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025, in observance of Presidents’ Day.
According to the message posted on its X handle, the mission will resume normal operations on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025 in observance of Presidents’ Day. We will resume normal operations on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.”
Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on the third Monday of February each year. Originally established in 1885 to honour the first U.S. president, George Washington, the holiday later evolved to celebrate all U.S. presidents, both past and present.

It is widely recognized with official ceremonies, sales events, and educational activities across the country.
The temporary closure of the U.S. diplomatic offices in Nigeria means that routine services such as visa applications, passport processing, and consular assistance will not be available on that day. However, emergency services for U.S. citizens in Nigeria will still be accessible through designated emergency contact lines.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria regularly observes American public holidays, aligning its operations with the official calendar of the U.S. government. Similar closures occur on other significant holidays such as Independence Day (July 4), Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
