TUC inaugurates new affiliate, bus conductors’ association

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has inaugurated an affiliated body, Bus Conductors’ Association of Nigeria. Speaking at the TUC President, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kangama, said the formation of the Bus Conductors’ Association of Nigeria was borne out of the need to address kidnapping of commuters through ‘one-chance’ method, among others.

According to comrade Kangama, “Bus conductors have been fingered as culprits or accessories to the commission of these crimes. It is against this background that some well-meaning Nigerians came together to organise what is known as Bus conductors’ Association of Nigeria, adding that the transport sector played a vital role in the socio-economic dynamics of the country and should be operated with sense of safety and sanity.

However, Mrs. Anthonia Ekpa, the representative of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, noted that conductors are the primary partners of drivers and they have a major role of ensuring safety and smooth running of road transport, adding that the conductors should have respect for members of the public.

The union opened the Lagos chapter of the association in Ikeja, Lagos.

Recall that recently the National President of the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria, BCAN, Comrade Israel Adeshola, said Lagos State will start wearing uniform as part of efforts to promote the Smart City Initiatives, SCI, of the state government.

“The Lagos State government has approved the association’s uniforms and badges with name tag and identification numbers for easy identification of registered conductors.”
